A great thing about writing blogs here on Alameda Runners is the ability to offer reviews of various products I stumble across. I recently ate my first package of GU Blueberrry Chomp energy blocks during a 12-mile training run in the Marin Headlands.
As much as I enjoy eating the gel-like substances, actually being able to chew something while running has been beneficial. I like to eat the Chomps a bit earlier than when I need an energy boost — remember that the gel products lead to faster effects.
Four Chomps (with each package shipping with eight pieces) have 90 calories, 11g sugar and 23g carbs, among other important nutritional needs for endurance athletes. Full ingredient list can be found here at the official Gu web site.
No caffeine in the blueberry GU Chomps, which is just fine for me. I’m a big fan of caffeine, but never have really enjoyed it during my activities.
My complete thoughts, including something I didn’t like much, can be found after the jump.
Unlike my experience with Clif Shot Blocks (review coming in the next couple of weeks), I could taste the Gu blueberry flavor the remaining four miles across the Golden Gate Bridge and back to the car. The after taste of blueberry wasn’t too bad, but it’s a bit more overpowering than I liked — especially if you don’t drink enough water. I’d recommend trying to eat the bloks in between sips of water, as I’ve found that has helped in the past.
If you’ve only eaten the energy gels and want to try something new, I’d recommend giving the GU Blueberry Pomegranate Chomps a try. The product should be available in your local running or cycling shop, and can also be found online.

Disclaimer: I purchased the Gu product reviewed in this blog entry. (I often receive freebies from companies looking to have products reviewed, and will disclose when that is the case.)

I haven’t tried the Gu blocks yet — will keep an eye out for them.
I LOVE the Clif Shot Blocks. The extra caffeine in the black cherry flavor makes me go longer and faster! Sometimes I’ll pop a few in the office if I don’t have time to grab coffee. I’m curious as to why you don’t enjoy them …

You young guys with the shots and blocks. I go with the good old fashioned GU or coffee, if I want caffeine. I could eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich during a long event but it is tough to carry while running.
