I am a fan of organic and natural foods. I am also a triathlete with a lousy metabolism for endurance sports. My body does not seem to be able to digest most foods and gels when it goes into endurance mode. That is a nice way of saying I often get sick or bonk when I do endurance events. I subconsciously know that I will get sick when I eat something, so I always avoid eating.
Skout Natural sent me a complete set of their products for review a few months ago and I just could not bring myself to write about them. Every time I looked at the label, I felt that I should be in a Berkeley coffee shop drinking chai tea while writing the review on an Apple computer. If you are wondering, I am at home drinking Starbucks coffee while typing on a Linux computer. Sometimes, we need to shed our preconceived notions and move on.
Full review after the jump:
Moving on to the review, the Skout bars are organic (I counted 11 mentions of organic on the package), gluten-free, vegan, non-GMO, dairy and soy free, kosher with naturally occurring nutrients and no refined sugars or filters. They look like hell, taste okay and digest really well. The moist texture really helps with the digestion and it makes them easy to eat.
Pros
- They are loaded with good calories.
- The Skout bars are made using dates and oats as the primary ingredients. The combination gives the bars a great texture that makes them easy to eat and digest.
- They are organic and natural. I feel that natural foods are much better for human consumption than foods that are loaded with genetically modified compounds. Some GMO’s are okay but I think that GMO’s to speed growth lose nutrition and flavor.
- Durable: the bars travel really well. They can withstand the heat that a body generates during endurance events.
- They don’t crumble. When racing, a crumbly food can make you choke and slow you down while you are busy trying to breathe.
Cons
- Hard to find. They are now available at REI.
- They look like hell but taste okay.
- The in your face organic marketing.
I like the bars. I like being able to eat while I am moving. Most of the time, I stop and walk to get something to eat. I do one or two events a year where I push myself to the limit. When I do those events, I have my food open, precut and ready to go. I eat while I am moving and breathing hard. The Skout bars are easy to manage, chew and digest.
